Pixar's Brave is Everything you Love About Pixar and More! (Spoiler Free Review!)

It's finally here! Pixar's latest film is finally here! I must say, Brave was phenominal! It's ability to combine scary scenes, hilarious jokes and emotion  while also telling an amazing story in the same movie is remarkable! This is no surprise, knowing that Pixar always had a way of combining the perfect blend of humor, heart and phenomenal storytelling in their films.

Brave follows the story of a girl named Merida, a princess who wants to live her own life of badass archery and freedom. Her parents, on the other hand, want her to get married. When the three clans visit to compete for Merida's hand in marraiage, Merida competes for her own hand and embarrasses her mother, Queen Elinor. So, when Merida runs out into the forest, she seeks an old witch and asks her for a spell. The results are unexpected. Merida has until the second sunrise to undo the curse or else the curse will be permanent.

Brave has everything you need to make a classic fairy tale. The mother and daughter relationship, some intense and scary scenes, a witch, an ancient curse and the art of three.

The humor in Brave is classic Pixar humor. The comedic timing is outstanding and hits you at just the right moments. It had me laughing really hard. I really like how some of the jokes were more on the rude side. The rude jokes were so unexpected and hilarious! The three lords and their sons, along with Merida's father, King Fergus, were amazing and really funny! Merida's triplet brothers, Hamish, Hubert and Harris, also stole the show with their hilarious antics!

Brave is not afraid to be scary and intense (which is great). It is sure to scare young children. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie. It honestly gave me goose bumps! Mor'du is one of the most dangerous villains in a Disney or Pixar movie. I really liked how Mor'du wasn't one of those villains you see in many of the Disney films. He is very different. Brave was as dark as Walt Disney era classics such as Pinocchio. It was also as dark as the Grimm Brothers fairy tales. Pixar has always been great at adding intense scenes in their movies. For example, the incinerator scene in Toy Story 3.

When it comes to the emotional aspect, Brave is a major tearjerker! I must admit, it made me cry! The mother and daughter relationship is so beautiful and relatable. This is one of many things Pixar excels at.

The characters in Brave are very memorable. Merida is instantly likable, Queen Elinor is also very likable and King Fergus, the triplets and the three lords and their sons were excellent comic relief. The characters are very relatable.

I really liked how the filmmakers made it so that the audience is both on Merida's side and Queen Elinor's side. They are not brought above one another and are both on the same level of likability. You hear both points of view and you don't pick favorites. You care for both characters and realize that they both do what they do because they think it's for the best.

The animation was stunning! The Scottish setting was brilliantly brought out and was incredibly detailed. Merida's hair was also amazing. It really told me a lot about her fiery personality. The character designs were also spectacular. None of this comes as a surprised. This is a Pixar movie, after all!

Overall, Brave is classic Pixar. It was an outstanding and epic movie filled with humor and a heart that really hit me. It is definitely another instant Pixar classic and is a fairy tale that is up there with the Walt Disney era fairy tales such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is a film that will be watched from geneartion to generation. Also, make sure you stay until after the credits. There is a little something there! Not only is this the best movie I've seen this summer, it's the best movie I've seen this year! Congratulations, Pixar! You've done it again!

Film Grade: A+

Also, La Luuna was also outstanding. It was a truly beautiful short film which was also really funny and creative at the same time!

  1. Probably one of Pixar’s best-looking flicks, but not their best film at all. Has a great set-up, but then loses itself about half-way through and just got a little too kiddish for me. Then again, maybe some parents will like that and so will the kids, so who am I to judge? Good review Ben.
