New Story Details for 'The Good Dinosaur' Emerge
This recent article talked about Peter Sohn replacing Bob Peterson in the director's chair for Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, a film that went into some production problems and got pushed back from 2014 to November 2015. However, it also talked about some aspects of the film that have been changed and reveal new story details as well. It also showed some beautiful concept art which you can see above this paragraph.
According to Peter Sohn, The basic idea of the film has remained the same since Bob Peterson was directing. It is still about the asteroid that made dinosaurs go extinct not hitting Earth and it is also still about a teenage Apatosaurus named Arlo who meets a human child named Spot and takes him as his pet. It's also supposed to be a buddy comedy. Peter Sohn also said that the heart of the story is the same as it was when Bob Peterson was directing, but the world in which the film takes place in has changed a lot. In fact, Peter Sohn is making nature the antagonist.
Also, we finally got an answer for why Bob Peterson got replaced! Apparently, Pixar's leadership, including Ed Catmull, felt that Bob Peterson was "creatively stuck" and he was too slow to make decisions that were crucial to the story. This is understandable and if it means that we get a better film, I don't really have a problem with director changes.
All of this makes me wonder what the film was originally going to be like. As I mentioned, they did keep some aspects the same but also changed some. I'm hoping that they will go more in depth on the film's production cycle on the Blu-Ray release. I'm really excited to see The Good Dinosaur next year!
