This is yet another Pixar trailer that caught me completely by surprise! We knew a new trailer for The Good Dinosaur was coming soon, but I, along with the entire animation community, thought we would have to wait until D23 next month. I was pleasantly surprised to be seeing a new trailer out so soon! Anyways, enough about that. Let's get onto the trailer itself!
Wow... Just wow... This trailer just left me speechless. However, that will not stop me from at least trying to talk about why I think this trailer is so amazing.
The entire trailer is almost completely silent, showing that, just like as Pete Sohn said, the film will focus more on visual storytelling and will have minimal dialogue, similar to Walt Disney classics such as Bambi and Dumbo and also similar to Pixar's own WALL-E. There is really only one word of spoken dialogue throughout the whole trailer and that's when Arlo says "Hello?" Other than that, all visual. The trailer gives off a very Bambi-esque vibe and I love it!
The character design and set design both look fantastic. The set design looks almost photorealistic, whereas the character design looks more cartoony and caricatured. Again, this brings to mind the likes of Bambi where the set design also looks realistic, contrasting with the cartoony character design.
We also get to see more of what Pete Sohn meant when he said that nature will be the antagonist, with plenty of dinosaurs and other various animals trying to get Arlo and Spot. Speaking of which, we also get to see some different animals, other than dinosaurs (which we also get to see more species of), which all look great! We see a lizard (a possible reference to Newt? I hope Pixar brings that film back!), yaks, and an awesome looking snake-lizard kind of thing that I think is a species Pixar came up with. Could that mean we'll be seeing more different species created by Pixar in this film? That would be so cool! Anyways, all the animals and dinosaurs have fantastic caricatured designs to them and it's cool to see how in this film, the dinosaurs co-exist with, not just humans, but other animals as well.
I also love how the trailer doesn't rely on jokes. there's only one scene that would be considered funny, which was also in the teaser, where the asteroid misses Earth and the dinosaurs look up and then continue eating as if nothing happened. It's hilarious! Also, maybe that quick shot where Spot is biting Arlo. But, everything else in the trailer is meant to show us just how epic the film is going to be.
This is an absolutely fantastic trailer. It's completely breathtaking and gives us an amazing glimpse of what to expect of Pixar's next masterpiece. But it does make me wonder: what will the next trailer be like? Will it be more dialogue focused, or will it also focus on visuals? What about the TV spots? Anyways, I hope you are all as excited for this film as I am!
