Think of the possibilities! |
President of Nintendo, Tatsumi Kimishima announced this in an interview with Japanese newspaper, Asahi News, saying:
"We're currently in talks. If funds flow in this year, I'm saying I'd like to put that money to use, and I'm not saying I'd like to use it five years in the future. I want to implement that before then."
This announcement is certainly nothing new. Nintendo has wanted to make animated films for a while now, even when the late Satoru Iwata (it still hurts to refer to him as "the late Satoru Iwata") was still the president of Nintendo before his tragic passing. Despite all the mix ups and all around chaos his death caused within the company, I'm glad to see that they are still thinking about making animated films.
Kimishima was talking about doing this when funds start to come in, but it might be a while before that starts to happen. They are currently not doing anything noteworthy with the Wii U and their next console, currently codenamed NX, is not released until March 2017. Not to mention that Nintendo doesn't have anything but the new Legend of Zelda game planned for E3. Not even an NX announcement! It kind of feels like Nintendo just hit the brakes on everything so they can just focus on developing the NX, which I can understand, but Nintendo needs to do more if they want to bring in some cash (and keep the trust of their fans) before the end of their fiscal year. But that is another rant for another day.
Now, think of the possibilities of Nintendo getting into making animated films. Film adaptations of video games do not have the best reputation, and it's easy to see why. Simply put, they're all terrible! But all of that could change. Nintendo always makes sure that they only put out quality entertainment and I'm sure when they make their films, that goal will be no different. Nintendo would clearly want their films to be as amazing as possible and I'm certain they will get some of the most talented and creative people making them.
On top of that, think of what Nintendo can do when adapting their properties onto the big screen using the art of animation! They have some of the most well known IPs, like Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros., Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, the list goes on! Imagine an epic adventure film taking place in the beautiful land of Hyrule with a Legend of Zelda adaptation. Or a fun, quirky romp in the Mushroom Kingdom with a Super Mario adaptation. Heck, imagine a Smash Bros. film! How awesome would that be?! They could do something similar to The Avengers but it would be a million times more epic because of all the Nintendo characters the film would have! Come to think of it, how about a Nintendo cinematic universe?!
I know my mind is going crazy right now but that's only because there is so much Nintendo can do with this! They have some of the most iconic characters of all time and can do whatever they want with them! It brings the imagination of a Nintendo fan like myself into complete overdrive! Film is such a different medium than video games and I really think its one Nintendo will reach the full potential of, telling stories that wouldn't work in a video game and can only work in an animated film.
As you can see, I am very excited to see Nintendo going into the realm of animated feature films. There is so much they can do with this and I hope they can start making these films very soon so they can make my crazy dreams a reality!
