It's been a long time coming, but exactly 3 months and 1 day after its release, Zootopia has finally topped $1 billion at the worldwide box office!
Honestly, I have been very surprised by how long Zootopia took to reach the coveted $1 billion. It seemed like it stopped making larger quantities of cash at around $900 million and was stuck in that zone for weeks on end! I had a feeling that today would be the day that it would reach this milestone, however. And, long and behold, it did! And I couldn't be more proud of this film's success!
Unlike Frozen, Zootopia, to me, is a film that actually deserves to hit $1 billion, along with each and every bit of praise it gets. This is a film that, no matter how much it is being praised or how much Disney will inevitably milk it, the film will never become "overrated." Frozen is easily one of the most overrated films to ever come out, simply because it isn't a strong enough film to survive all of the praise it gets without it becoming tiresome. We all cringed at the announcement of a Frozen sequel but, let's admit it, we all want a sequel to Zootopia and myself, along with millions of other people around the world will squeal with excitement when they announce the inevitable Zootopia 2 or Zootopia TV series. Or, better yet, both! There is so much they can do with a sequel and TV series and this can be one of those times where Disney's habit of milking franchises can actually be for the better!
A sequel or a TV series can work so well because there is so much world to explore. What we saw in Zootopia was some of the best world building ever put on film, as I said in my review of the film, but that was only scratching the surface. There is so much more that can be explored and so many more opportunities for characters and settings they can do. This is a whole entire universe of only animals, there is so much more that can be done with this world, on top of the ingenuity that is featured in the original film.
But enough about sequels and how Disney will milk this franchise, the main point here is that Zootopia, one of the most inventive, relevant films I have ever seen, is now a member of the $1 billion club, and it makes me so happy to see this. Clearly this is a film that resonated with audiences and had a message that stuck with them.
So, to the fantastic film that is Zootopia and everyone involved with the film, directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-director Jared Bush, along with all of the writers, animators, artists, voice actors and everyone who helped make this film a reality, I would like to extend my deepest congratulations. This is a film that made its mark with its inventive world and storytelling and its beautiful message about equality towards everyone, despite race or gender, which is a message more relevant than it has ever been. It deserves each and every bit of success and praise it has gotten and I hope everyone who worked on the film is proud of it.
