Dumbo Movie Review

Dumbo is Walt Disney's 4th full length animated film. It was made after Fantasia which, unfortunately, didn't make much money in the box office and Walt Disney had to come up with a project that didn't cost as much and had to finish it as soon as possible. This film proves that no matter how rushed a project was, Walt Disney was still able to make it a brilliant film.

in Dumbo, a stork brings Mrs. Jumbo a baby elephant which soon becomes the laughing stock of all of the elephants because of his big ears. After his mother gets sent to prison for defending Dumbo from being picked on by children, Dumbo becomes socially washed up, without a friend in the world. That is, until he meets a mouse named Timothy, who Dumbo befriends. Timothy wants to help Dumbo become famous, so he gets the circus director to put Dumbo on the very top of the elephants making a pyramid for the act. After Dumbo screws it up, he has to be a clown for the circus. When everything seems hopeless, Dumbo and Timothy realize that Dumbo can fly with his big ears and Dumbo is then recognized.

Even though I pretty much summarized the film for you, I still highly recommend that you go see it, if you for some reason haven't seen it already.

Despite the film's 64 minute run time, a lot still happens in the film, but in no way feels rushed. That is a big accomplishment. The 64 minute runtime also seemed very necessary. I can not imagine the film being any longer.

I also really enjoyed the music in the film. The songs were very catchy and a lot of fun to listen to.
Dumbo was a very heartwarming and beautiful film. Some parts might even make you cry. I know the film made me cry. That heartwarming scene when Mrs. Jumbo puts Dumbo on her trunk and swings Dumbo back and forth while she is in prison, unable to even see her own son because she's chained up. Meanwhile, it shows all of these child animals resting peacefully with their mothers and fathers by their sides. That scene is so beautifully executed that it is sure to make you shed a tear.

Another scene that I think I should mention is the Pink Elephants on Parade scene. It happens when Dumbo and Timothy accidentally get drunk by drinking what they thought was a large bowl of water. Little did they know, the clowns accidentally spilt the alcohol into the water. When Dumbo and Timothy are drunk, they begin to see pink elephants leading to a whole scene filled with many amazing colors with remarkable animation and music. Also, the transition from the end of the sequence to when it is morning, where the elephants look like they are turning into the clouds was very cool.
The main characters were also very lovable. Dumbo was a very adorable and lovable character. Timothy the mouse was a hilarious character and was also very lovable. Mrs. Jumbo was another lovable character. Also, the characters who you were meant to hate, such as those gossiping elephants were very unlikable which was clearly what the filmmakers were going for.

Overall, Dumbo is an outstanding film with great songs, characters, humor, heart and story and is very well executed. It is definitely a Walt Disney classic. If you have not seen it for some reason, you should definitely check it out.

Film Grade: A+
