'How to Train Your Dragon 2' Makes $50 Million on Its Opening Weekend
On its opening weekend, How to Train Your Dragon 2 made $50 million, making it in 2nd place, losing to 22 Jump Street. This is by no means bad, but it's not that great, either.
The reason I think this happened was because of the marketing. The trailers and TV spots did not get me at all excited and not only did Fox spoil a big part of the film in their trailer, despite DreamWorks not wanting it in the trailer, but they also made it seem like it was kind of a rehash of the original film. The trailers did not show anything overly mind-blowing and, as you can obviously tell by these box office results, these trailers did not properly market the film. The trailers made it seem too similar to the original which, as you will see in the review I will be posting soon, is not the case at all.
So what does this mean the ending box office result will be? I have no clue. It will most likely reach $100 million domestically and $150 million is always a possibility, but $200 million seems like it will be an almost impossible goal for the film to reach and I will be quite surprised if it does. But, if word of mouth about the film is rampant, then it will hopefully perform very well. Only time will tell.
