Dr. Suess' The Lorax Movie Review

I really enjoy the Dr. Suess books and The Lorax is no exception, so when I heard about this film being made, I was excited but also a bit skeptical. The Lorax was, unfortunately, a bad film.

Dr. Suess' The Lorax takes place in Thneedville, a place where trees no longer exist. instead, people have plastic trees and buy air. Ted, a child played by Zac Efron, is in love with a teenager named Audrey, played by Taylor Swift. When Audrey blurts out to Ted that she has always wanted to see a real tree and that she would marry any guy who would show her that tree (yes, the writing is that stupid), Ted goes to see the Onceler, who tells Ted the story of The Lorax.

The writing in this film was really bad and the only good parts in the writing were when they followed the book, which, unfortunately, wasn't too often. Like I said before, Audrey randomly tells Ted that she would marry the guy who shows her a real tree, and writing like that is really stupid, dull and boring.

This film is also a musical. The songs were very poorly written and unnecessary. Through the terrible writing of the songs and how forced the songs feel, you can tell that the musical element was just a stupid way to stretch out the movie to hit the 1 hour and 30 minute mark since it is based on a short book.

The first act of the film feels very rushed, even though they are trying to stretch out the movie. You would think that the film makers would have wanted to make it a bit slower.

Another thing I didn't like about the film was the story with Ted. It makes the story of The Lorax feel like a side story, even though the story of The Lorax should be the main story. Also, at some points of the movie, Ted is the main character but then at other points, the Onceler becomes the main character. There are two things wrong with that: First of all, switching back and forth like that creates a big mess of a film. Second of all, The Lorax is supposed to be the main character in this film.

I loved The Lorax in this film. He was hilarious and he was the only redeeming quality of this film. Most of the jokes any of the other characters made fell flat. Unfortunately, the Lorax wasn't in the film so much and I wanted to see alot more of the Lorax. The Lorax was voiced by Danny DeVito and he did a remarkable job. The Lorax should have been in the whole movie, not just a few minutes of the movie.

Overall, this film shouldn't be called Dr. Suess' The Lorax, it should be called Ted and the Truffula Trees. You should probably skip this film, but if you really want to see it, don't see it in theaters, rent it.

Film Grade: D
