'Inside Out' Opens with $91 Million, Marks the Biggest Opening Weekend for an Original Film
This is probably the most intense weekend at the box office I've ever experienced! With Inside Out and Jurassic World going head-to-head, Inside Out had some stellar competition. Ultimately, though, Inside Out only made it to second place, breaking Pixar's streak of films constantly topping the box office on opening weekend. But that doesn't mean it couldn't break a pretty huge record along the way! Let's take a look at the numbers!
First, why was this weekend at the box office so intense? Well, Jurassic World and Inside Out, both of which are family friendly films, were in direct competition. But, Jurassic World unexpectedly broke the record for the highest grossing opening weekend of all time the weekend before. So the competition was fierce. And this past weekend was a very interesting one at the box office.
Let's start this with June 19th, the opening day of Inside Out. This was a very interesting day because Inside Out actually beat Jurassic World! That's right, Inside Out made $34 million that day, while Jurassic World made $29 million! At this point, everyone (myself included) were starting to think that Inside Out might just take that top spot over the weekend.
But, then Saturday came around, and while Inside Out made a stellar $30 million, Jurassic World made $39 million. Similarly, on Sunday, Inside Out made $25 million, while Jurassic World made $38 million. So, Jurassic World topped the box office that weekend with $106 million, while Inside Out came in 2nd with $90 million, making it the first Pixar film not to top the box office on its opening weekend.
However, with these details, this may not seem like such a good thing. However, even though Inside Out didn't come in 1st, it actually broke a pretty huge record! Yes, it broke the record for the biggest opening weekend for an original film, beating James Cameron's Avatar, which made $77 million. It is also the 2nd highest opening weekend for a Pixar film, right behind Toy Story 3, which brought in $110 million. Worldwide, Inside Out has made $131 million as of today.
So, what does this mean for Inside Out during its entire box office run? Well, I would love to see it become the next highest grossing animated film of all time. If you think about it, this actually does seem very possible. The current highest grossing animated film of all time, Frozen not only also made it in 2nd on its opening weekend, but made $67 million that weekend, which is less than what Inside Out just made!
Think about how amazing it would be if Inside Out became the next highest grossing animated film! Never again would we hear people constantly singing Let it Go or just raving on and on about Frozen in general! And all of that Disney Store shelf space crammed with Frozen toys that take up almost half the store? It could shrink in size, making room for other Disney merchandise! All of the undeserved hype that Frozen is still getting could just disappear! Maybe Inside Out, a film much more deserving of that kind of hype can just take Frozen's place! Or maybe I'm just overthinking it. Maybe Frozen would still be hyped as all hell even if it was no longer the highest grossing animated film of all time, but everything I just mentioned in this paragraph will continue to be a pipe dream of mine. (At this point, I would like to point out that I don't think Frozen is a bad film. I think it's great! Just the amount of hype it's getting is completely undeserved and should go to a superior film like Inside Out.)
But will Inside Out really become the next highest grossing animated film of all time? Only time will tell, but I think it has every opportunity to. If it doesn't, then it should at least reach the $1 billion mark if word of mouth is strong and they keep marketing the film as strongly as they have been these past few weeks. No matter what, I hope it will prove to Hollywood that people don't want to see reboots, sequels or adaptation, but instead want to see original films with creative and inventive stories.
Overall, while I'm a bit upset that Inside Out didn't top the weekend box office, I am still full of joy after seeing it break such a huge record! I'm really looking forward to seeing how Inside Out performs in the coming weeks.
