I just saw Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and while
it’s a fun time at theaters (for the most part), there are some major flaws in
the film.
In the film, Flint Lockwood realizes that his food invention
has been creating living “foodimals” and Flint needs to stop his invention.
The story in the film is a bit interesting, but, without
spoiling anything, it turns into this environmental film, and that is an ok
route to go with this film, but it is way too over the top. However, it does
lead to some great relationships with the characters and some well needed
character development. I cared about the main characters such as Flint, Tim,
and Sam, but I just wished that the side characters would just shut up! The
villain in this film had a few good moments. The way he moves is also really
funny.
I feel the need to talk about the police character in the
film, because he was my favorite character in the original. In this film, he is
really funny at the beginning, but as the film goes on, his jokes were just
stupid and unfunny. The same goes for many of the other side characters in the
film.
Some of the jokes are funny, some are just awful, but there
are also some that are funny for around two seconds but are then overused. I
hate when films do that! There are also a lot of jokes that are just simply
gross and unfunny and didn’t need to be in the film. The film relies too much
on toilet humor and pop culture references.
The screenplay is also pretty bad. The characters pretty
much say what is already obviously happening on screen, which is a problem.
There are examples, but I don’t want to spoil anything.
As for the good aspects of the film? Well, as I mentioned
before, the story is interesting, even if it is kind of ruined by the
screenplay. Some of the characters are also well developed, even though some
characters don’t develop at all. Also, some of the jokes are pretty funny and
the score is really nice to listen to. Also, the animation is beautiful.
Overall, I’d give the film a slight recommendation, but if
you don’t end up seeing it, you’re really not missing out on anything.
