Ed Catmull Talks More About Pixar
Ed Catmull has been talking a lot about what goes on inside Pixar. We now know more about Pixar's inner workings in only a couple weeks than we ever have. But Ed Catmull isn't done yet. Just recently, he wrote an article where he talks about "balancing art and commerce." But at the end of the article, he also talked about Pixar's cancelled project, Newt.
Apparently, Newt wasn't working so he gave the film to Pete Docter (that was a very interesting fact that I did not know until now) who said that he has a completely different idea which he thinks is better. That film was what will be Pixar's next film, Inside Out.
So, what does this mean? Could Newt be coming back? Seeing as how there are not that many hints that claim they are and that he said, "That was the reason we didn't continue with Newt," while I do think it could be a possibility, I don't see it happening anytime soon.
But, you should also consider the fact that many of the Pixar films have had very bumpy production histories. Just look at WALL-E, Cars, Ratatouille, the list goes on! All of these films had all of the same problems that Newt seems to be facing. Yet, those films pulled through and ended up being released. That is why I think Newt has a chance to do the same.
Ed Catmull also brought up another interesting topic. He pretty much said that you should not go too far with making sequels and how Pixar makes projects that are more difficult to sell toys from. This goes completely against all of the people who think that Pixar is only making sequels from now on. This is why you shouldn't worry about Cars 3 and The Incredibles 2 being bad films and why you also shouldn't worry about Pixar's future.
