The President of Pixar, Ed Catmull, has spoken out about Pixar's future, their upcoming films among other things. This is getting me really excited so let's dive right in!
First, he brought up The Good Dinosaur. Unfortunately, he did not mention anything about a new director. He did, however, say that they will be "restarting" the film and that they are rethinking the production team.
It's really good to know that The Good Dinosaur is still in production since the lack of updates on the film implied otherwise. I feel that the concept of Dinosaurs being farmers is a brilliant idea and I hope they still keep it in the final product. But, if they need to restart the entire film, it would be an absolute miracle if it meets its November 25, 2015 release date. They shouldn't rush the film, though and they most likely won't.
One thing I want to know is if this will be a similar situation to Trash Planet and The Yellow Car. These were two Pixar films where the concepts completely changed and evolved into different Pixar films. The Yellow Car was reworked into Cars and Trash Planet was reworked into WALL-E. As I mentioned before, I hope that Pixar at least keeps the unique concept of dinosaurs being farmers in The Good Dinosaur or at least come up with a concept that is just as unique.
Ed Catmull also pointed out that Pixar has made some mistakes and that despite what some people think, Pixar is not dying. He says that the Pixar Braintrust has made some mistakes and that after films like Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Toy Story 3, they raised the bar in storytelling so high that people have had really high expectations of them. He goes on to say that while Pixar is already going through this situation, Disney will run into this problem soon as well, so be careful, Disney!
I've been saying this for a long time. Pixar is not giving up on making quality films. The Pixar Braintrust consists of human beings, not Gods. They may come off as Gods in the animation community, but they are human beings who are not perfect and make mistakes. That's what humans do. I really respect the fact that they are not afraid to actually come out and say that they have made mistakes and that they will fix them while other film studios simply wouldn't admit to their mistakes and not do anything to fix them.
I, for one, couldn't be any more excited about Pixar's future. Every single one of their upcoming projects look extremely promising and I know that they will live up to everyone's high expectations.
