Iron Man 3 is an Epic Start for Phase 2 Marvel Films

With the upcoming release of The Avengers 2, Marvel is building up the film’s release by making sequels to each of the superhero’s standalone films, like they did to build up the first film. Iron Man 3 is kicking it off, and there could not have been a better way to do so.

Iron Man 3 is everything you would look for in a Marvel film, yet at the same time, it’s completely different. While it has all the action and humor you would expect, the story is very different from your average Marvel film.

From this point and on, this review might contain some spoilers, so depending on what your definition of “spoiler” is, read not further. There are no massive spoilers, though. Also note, I rarely put spoilers in my reviews, but in this case, I can’t make my point clear any other way

For a good chunk of the movie, Tony Stark is unable to use his Iron Man suit, so there is not much Iron Man action until the final act. Because of this, Tony needs to learn how to live without the suit. It’s a really interesting way to develop Tony Stark’s character. It helps you get to know the man behind Iron Man and realize that there’s more to him than just a metal suit. There are also points where Tony Stark must fight without his Iron Man suit and those were awesome to watch.

Another thing that makes Iron Man 3 so different is its humor. While Marvel always has humor in their films, Iron Man 3 has one scene that has a very different type of humor. Also, I really enjoyed the score.

The outcome of this film’s villain, the Mandarin, might anger fans of the comic book since it’s apparently different from the comics. This might have been a surprise to everyone, even those who read the comics and, therefore, think they know what will happen. However, I don’t think fans of the comics look for surprises as much as they look for accuracy to the source material. Having not read the comics, it didn’t frustrate me as much as it might frustrate those who have read the comics.

The acting was amazing. Particularly from Robert Downey Jr. who gave tons of humor to Tony Stark's character and the whole film, and also acted in a way that realize that Tony Stark is more than just Iron Man and gives him the character and character development he needs to make people care for him.

The only problem I had with the film was that some scenes were kind of slow. Particularly the beginning of the film. This could be easily overlooked, however, since the rest of the film is filled with action, humor and character development.

Overall, despite a rather slow beginning, Iron Man 3 is a fun, different film and a great way to kick off the 2nd phase of Marvel movies.

Film Grade: A
